Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals Makes Donation to The Free Medical Clinic

April 5, 2004

Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals has donated $10,000 to Columbia’s Free Medical Clinic. The gift was made in honor of the physicians on its medical staff as part of its Doctors’ Day recognition activities. (National Doctors’ Day is observed on March 30th. It was established to honor Crawford Long, MD, who in 1852 was the first physician to use anesthesia in surgery.)

“Our physicians are dedicated to not only our patients and our mission,” said Stephen A. Purves, Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals president and CEO, “but also to our community. “So many of them give their time to The Free Medical Clinic. We thought such a contribution would be a fitting acknowledgement of their commitment to serving mankind.”

Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals is sponsored by Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Health System and is comprised of Providence Hospital, Providence Heart Institute, and Providence Hospital Northeast.
